Marumo Gallants bring Sundra Govender back into technical team

Marumo Gallants have added Sundra Govender to their technical team as the club attempts to recover from a difficult start to the Premiership season.

Sources at the club have told Soccer Laduma that the squad was introduced to Govender, who is expected to work alongside head coach Phuti Mohafe. The precise nature of his role has not been confirmed.

Mohafe is currently also assisted by Musa Bilankulu, who joined Marumo Gallants at the beginning of the season. Govender’s return will therefore add another member to the coaching set-up, although he was not involved from the bench during the club’s latest match.

A source with knowledge of the situation said the players were informed of Govender’s return before their fixture against TS Galaxy at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Tuesday evening.

“The management informed us before the game against TS Galaxy that Sundra is back with us. We were training before that match. They didn’t mention his exact position,” said the source, who asked not to be named.

Govender was absent from the technical area as Marumo Gallants were beaten 3-2 by TS Galaxy. Despite not being present for that match, he is expected to take his place alongside Mohafe and Bilankulu in the coming matches.

The move represents a return to Marumo Gallants for Govender. He has previously worked with the club and was most recently associated with The Bees, who compete in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Neither Govender nor Marumo Gallants spokesperson Rufus Matsena was available to comment on his return or his expected responsibilities within the technical team.

Marumo Gallants are currently 15th in the PSL standings. They have lost three of their opening four matches, with their only other result being a draw.

The club’s latest defeat came at home against TS Galaxy, leaving them without a win from their first four league fixtures. The introduction of Govender is the latest change to the team’s technical structure as Marumo Gallants look to improve their results.

Although the club’s management has confirmed to the players that Govender is back, his title and specific duties have yet to be communicated. For now, he is expected to work with Mohafe and Bilankulu as the side seeks to move away from the lower end of the table.
