Stanley Nwabili: a rising star shining bright for Nigeria at AFCON
Francis Uzoho found himself on the sidelines, not defending the colors of the “Green Eagles” as expected, during the African Cup of Nations. Instead, José Peseiro opted for another talent.
After a four-day journey, Peseiro returned from South Africa determined to include Stanley Nwabili as the goalkeeper in his final squad for the African Cup of Nations.
With just one match, Peseiro found his solution.
He spoke to Nwabili and informed him of his inclusion in the roster.
Peseiro took the promising Stanley Nwabili to face Equatorial Guinea in the CAN group stage, where the 27-year-old conceded a goal in his tournament debut with Nigeria.
Peseiro paid little attention to the criticisms directed at him, sticking firmly to his initial choice.
Match after match, Nwabili gained confidence and successfully safeguarded the goal from opposing attacks during the tournament.
The Nigerian fans embraced him, and he played a pivotal role in securing their spot in the quarterfinals after overcoming Cameroon.
Despite concerns about Nwabili’s injury and doubts about his participation against Angola, he started from the first whistle, guiding the national team to the semi-finals to face South Africa.
In the attacking third, Nwabili began his professional journey with the “Joe Rawns” club in Nigeria.
Coaches convinced him to make a drastic transition to goalkeeping, and he proved his worth.
Nwabili did not seek professionalism beyond Africa, capturing the attention of Nigerian officials for international participation, even though he had only played in a friendly against Mexico in 2021.

Comparatively unknown when placed alongside stars like Victor Osimhen of Napoli, Alex Iwobi of Fulham, Samuel Chukwueze of AC Milan, and Ademola Lookman of Atalanta, considering their different positions, Nwabili is now making a significant impact.
His current team, Chippa United, stands in the thirteenth position in the South African league.
With his outstanding performances and reaching the tournament’s semi-finals, Nwabili exemplifies seizing opportunities when they arise.
Reflecting on this, he stated in a previous interview, “I say to everyone playing in the national football league, never lose hope no matter what happens.
Just believe in yourself regardless of where you are and where you come from.”
