As the 34th edition of the African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast nears its conclusion, Morocco is taking a proactive stance for the forthcoming AFCON 2025, which it is set to host. In a significant announcement on Monday, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) provided clarity on the event’s schedule.
The African Cup of Nations has evolved into a global football spectacle, garnering heightened attention and enthusiasm across the continent and beyond.
The current edition, hosted by Côte d’Ivoire, has been particularly noteworthy for its meticulous organization, setting new standards for the tournament.
Despite the rescheduling from last summer to the current winter period due to weather considerations, the competition has maintained its prominence.
The logistical challenges faced by European clubs in releasing their African players for the tournament have led to controversies and player refusals, exemplified by instances like Régis Mughe’s decision to abstain from representing his country.
Anticipating such concerns for AFCON 2025, scheduled for next year, Morocco has taken a proactive step to alleviate potential conflicts.
In an official press release on Monday, the FRMF confirmed that AFCON 2025 will be held in the summer, aligning with the period when football clubs typically observe their off-season break.
The announcement was embedded within a statement reaffirming the continuity of coach Walid Regragui’s tenure, despite Morocco’s disappointing performance in AFCON 2023.
The press release quoted Mr. Fouzi LEKJAA, the president of the FRMF, emphasizing the commitment to ongoing efforts and full investment to elevate the National Selection and football in the country.
The missive articulated the aspiration to bring joy to Moroccan supporters during upcoming competitions, including the continuation of qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup and the 35th edition of AFCON in the summer of 2025, aligning with the strategic direction guided by High Royal Solicitude.
