Tottenham Hotspur’s Savinho move takes summer spending beyond £300m

Tottenham Hotspur have signed Brazil winger Savinho from Manchester City, taking their close-season spending beyond £300m under manager Roberto De Zerbi after the club narrowly avoided relegation last season.

The Premier League clubs confirmed the transfer on Monday, although neither disclosed the fee or the length of Savinho’s contract. British media reports last week said Tottenham would pay £75m, with a further £10m potentially due in add-ons.

The deal takes Spurs’ reported total spending to £322m if all the additional payments are included, as De Zerbi continues to reshape a squad that finished 17th in the Premier League last term.

“[Savinho] is a player who brings energy, imagination and quality in wide positions. He has the courage to attack defenders and the ability to change a game with his creativity,” De Zerbi said in a statement.

“We’re very pleased to have him with us, and I’m looking forward to working with him, helping him continue to grow and seeing him bring his personality to the team.”

Savinho began his career at Atletico Mineiro before joining Troyes in 2022. His most notable breakthrough came during a loan spell with Girona, where he scored 11 goals in 41 appearances.

That season helped Girona achieve the highest finish in the club’s history, ending the 2023-24 LaLiga campaign in third place and securing qualification for the Champions League.

Savinho subsequently moved to Manchester City during the close season in 2024. He has made 84 appearances in all competitions for the club and scored seven goals. The 22-year-old has also won 13 caps for Brazil.

His arrival represents the latest major addition to Tottenham’s squad during an extensive transfer window. The club have also recruited midfielders Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, along with defenders Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke.

Tottenham’s recruitment programme comes against the backdrop of a difficult opening to the new Premier League campaign. They began with a 3-0 defeat by Brentford on Saturday, increasing the pressure on De Zerbi after last season’s relegation battle.

The London club now turn their attention to the League Cup, with Championship side Charlton Athletic visiting Tottenham in the second round on Wednesday. Spurs then host Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday.

Tottenham are also reportedly negotiating with Manchester City over a possible move for Egypt forward Omar Marmoush, according to British media.

Savinho’s transfer further strengthens the attacking options available to De Zerbi, while continuing Tottenham’s substantial investment in a squad undergoing significant change following their lowly league finish.
