Cristiano Ronaldo could be suspended for between one and six months by Portugal after leaving the national team’s training camp before their Nations League match against Denmark, according to the British newspaper The Mirror.
The Al Nassr captain departed before the fixture as tensions between the player and Portugal escalated. Although Ronaldo later issued a lengthy apology, the report says he has already been subject to an automatic suspension under the regulations of the Portuguese Football Federation.
A disciplinary board is expected to decide the length of the suspension after considering all the circumstances surrounding the incident, including Ronaldo’s apology.
A ban lasting more than one month would rule Ronaldo out of Portugal’s Nations League matches against Denmark and Wales next month.
Ronaldo played in Portugal’s opening Nations League match against Wales, which ended in a 1-0 victory for Portugal, with Joao Felix scoring the only goal.
He was then absent for the second-round match against Norway, a game Portugal won 2-1, before leaving the squad ahead of the third match against Denmark.
Portugal had already secured their place in the quarter-finals of the competition after winning all four of their group matches, with two rounds still remaining.
