Maswanganyi leaves Orlando Pirates after trophy-filled three-year spell

Patrick Maswanganyi has completed his move from Orlando Pirates to Bahrain Premier League side Alkhaldiya Sports Club, ending a three-year spell with the Soweto club in which he won seven major domestic trophies and became one of the most recognisable figures in the Buccaneers’ recent history.

The 28-year-old midfielder joined Pirates from SuperSport United in 2023 and departs with 120 appearances, 28 goals and 21 assists. The club confirmed his departure on Monday, describing Maswanganyi, widely known as Tito, as a fan favourite who gave the Ghost “countless moments to celebrate”.

His influence at Orlando Pirates went beyond his statistics. Maswanganyi brought flair, imagination and a willingness to take risks to a side that enjoyed one of the most successful periods in its modern history.

When he arrived, there was little doubt about his ability, but questions remained over whether his skill and individuality could thrive at one of South Africa’s biggest clubs. He answered them quickly.

Maswanganyi played a key attacking role in his first season as Pirates won both the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup. He scored 10 goals in all competitions during that campaign, according to the club’s career record, and was rewarded with three individual honours at the 2023/24 PSL Awards.

He was named DStv Premiership Players’ Player of the Season, DStv Premiership Midfielder of the Season and Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament.

The Players’ Player award was particularly significant, reflecting the esteem in which Maswanganyi was held by his fellow professionals. Within one season of joining Pirates, he had been recognised as the leading player in his position and one of the best performers in the league.

His Nedbank Cup campaign contained one of the defining moments of that first season. Maswanganyi scored twice against AmaZulu in the quarter-final as Pirates recovered from a goal down to win 4-2 and reach the last four.

In the final, Pirates met Mamelodi Sundowns at Mbombela Stadium. With the match finely balanced, Maswanganyi took responsibility from the penalty spot after the Buccaneers were awarded a spot-kick. He sent Ronwen Williams the wrong way to make it 1-1, before Relebohile Mofokeng scored late to secure the trophy.

Maswanganyi’s penalty was not the winning goal, but it underlined his composure in a high-pressure situation and his willingness to take responsibility when it mattered.

A signature Soweto Derby moment

Maswanganyi added another memorable chapter to his Pirates career in the Soweto Derby on 1 February 2025.

With Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs seemingly heading for a goalless draw, Pirates won a penalty deep into stoppage time. Maswanganyi stepped up and produced a Panenka, delicately chipping the ball down the middle and leaving the goalkeeper helpless as the Pirates supporters celebrated.

The PSL described the effort as an “ice-cold” penalty. It was a fitting moment for a player whose football was closely linked to his personality and who was never afraid to express himself.

There were tricks, flicks, inventive passes and spectacular goals during Maswanganyi’s time at Pirates, although his career was not without difficult periods. He was criticised, dropped and at times struggled to deliver the consistency expected of a player with his ability.

Even so, whenever an opportunity came his way, Maswanganyi often found a way to produce something memorable.

His final full season brought further evidence of his contribution. He scored 10 goals and supplied four assists in 34 appearances during the 2025/26 campaign, despite starting only 20 matches.

That output helped Pirates during a historic season which ended with the Betway Premiership title. Maswanganyi therefore leaves the club as a league champion, adding the championship to three MTN8 medals, two Nedbank Cup medals and the Carling Black Label Cup.

His next chapter will be in Bahrain with Alkhaldiya Sports Club. While not every performance was perfect and not every decision came off, Maswanganyi’s time at Orlando Pirates was defined by entertainment, personality and the sense that something unexpected could happen whenever he received the ball.
