Egypt handed automatic place as 42 teams battle for seven U23 AFCON 2027 slots

Egypt have automatically qualified for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations Under-23 tournament as hosts, leaving 42 other nations to compete for the remaining seven places at the finals.

The qualification campaign will feature three rounds, with teams required to navigate home-and-away ties to secure a place at the tournament.

CAF has confirmed Egypt as the host nation for the 2027 U23 AFCON, which will also serve as Africa’s qualifying tournament for the men’s football competition at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The final tournament will consist of eight teams – hosts Egypt and seven nations emerging from the qualification process.

How the qualifying format works

The first round will involve 28 of the 42 participating teams, with the sides playing two-legged ties on a home-and-away basis.

The other 14 teams will receive byes into the second round. Those exemptions will be determined by their performances at the previous three editions of the U23 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 14 winners from the opening round will then join the 14 exempted teams in the second round.

That will leave 28 teams competing in another series of home-and-away ties, with the winners of the 14 ties progressing to the final qualifying round.

The third and final round will see those 14 teams paired against each other.

Each tie will again be decided over two legs, with the seven aggregate winners securing qualification for the 2027 U23 AFCON finals in Egypt.

The pathway can therefore be summarised as:

• First round: 28 teams compete in 14 home-and-away ties.
• Second round: The 14 first-round winners join 14 exempted teams, producing 14 ties.
• Third round: The 14 second-round winners are paired in seven home-and-away ties.
• Final tournament: Egypt plus the seven third-round winners make up the eight-team finals.

The format means that teams entering the competition in the opening round will need to overcome three separate two-legged ties to reach the finals.

More than a place at the U23 AFCON

The 2027 tournament will carry added significance because it will determine Africa’s representatives at the 2028 Olympic Games.

Africa’s allocation for the men’s Olympic football tournament has been reduced from three places to two after the men’s Olympic competition was cut to 12 teams for Los Angeles 2028. As a result, only the two finalists at the 2027 U23 AFCON are expected to qualify for the Olympics.

That gives the qualification campaign an added dimension, with nations not only competing for a place at the continental tournament but also beginning a potential route towards Olympic qualification.

Egypt have previous experience of hosting and succeeding at the U23 AFCON. They won the 2019 edition on home soil, beating Ivory Coast 2-1 after extra time in the final in Cairo.

The 2027 tournament is provisionally scheduled for November, although the final calendar will be determined by the Confederation of African Football.

For the 42 nations chasing the seven available places, the message is straightforward: there is no margin for error over the three rounds, with only the teams that survive the final two-legged ties earning the right to join Egypt at the finals.
