Manchester United explore loan deal for Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde

Manchester United are exploring a move for Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde, with the English club understood to be seeking a season-long loan that would include an option to buy.

According to Spanish network ESPN, Manchester United are working on a deal for the Spain international during the current transfer window. However, Barcelona’s preference is to complete a permanent sale rather than agree to a temporary move.

The Catalan club are seeking between £30m and £40m for Balde. That fee would allow them to bring in another defender before the transfer window closes.

Balde’s agent, Jorge Mendes, is attempting to find an agreement that satisfies both clubs. His discussions are focused on reaching terms that would suit Manchester United’s interest in a loan arrangement while meeting Barcelona’s desire to receive a significant transfer fee.

The 21-year-old was left out of Barcelona’s squad for their opening match against Elche on Sunday, played in the second round of La Liga. Barcelona won that game 5-0 at the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is expected to hold a private meeting with Balde before a final decision is made over the player’s future.

Balde came through Barcelona’s youth system before being promoted to the first team in the summer of 2022. Since then, he has made 168 official appearances for the club, scoring three goals and providing 21 assists.

His potential departure would leave Barcelona needing to strengthen in defence before the transfer window closes, which is why the club is currently placing greater emphasis on a permanent transfer rather than allowing him to leave on loan.

Manchester United’s interest comes as they assess their defensive options, while Barcelona must decide whether Balde remains part of Flick’s plans or whether his sale can help fund a replacement.

Barcelona’s next fixture is the rearranged La Liga match against Athletic Club on Thursday. The game, which was postponed from the opening round, will be played at Camp Nou.
