Flavio Amado appointed Angola Under-20 manager until 2027

Flavio Amado, the former Al Ahly striker and Angola football legend, has been officially appointed head coach of Angola Under-20s on a contract running until August 2027.

The Angolan Football Federation confirmed that Amado will lead the country’s youth side as it prepares for a series of upcoming international challenges. His immediate priorities will include the COSAFA Cup and qualification for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

“Flavio will take charge of the Angola Under-20 team with the aim of preparing the squad for the upcoming international challenges, with a particular focus on participation in the COSAFA Cup and, at the same time, qualification for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations,” the federation said.

The appointment follows Amado’s first major success as a manager. Last season, he guided Petro Atletico to the Angolan league title, securing the championship for the club for a fifth consecutive season.

It was Amado’s first league title in management. He took over at Petro Atletico after Portuguese coach Ricardo Cheu left the club, having guided them to third place before his departure.

Amado’s move into coaching follows a distinguished playing career, including a highly successful spell with Egyptian giants Al Ahly between 2005 and 2009. During that period, he established himself as one of the club’s most celebrated foreign players.

He ended his playing career in 2014 with Petro Atletico, the same club where he had begun his career as a footballer. After retiring, Amado remained involved with the Angolan club, initially working as an assistant coach before being promoted to head coach.

His first season in senior management brought immediate silverware, and he will now turn his attention to developing Angola’s next generation of players. The Under-20 side’s schedule will include the COSAFA Cup, while qualification for the following year’s Africa Cup of Nations will provide another important target during his contract.

The federation’s decision places a coach with experience of both elite playing environments and domestic management in charge of the youth national team. Amado’s years at Al Ahly gave him a prominent profile in African football, while his recent title success with Petro Atletico marked the beginning of his managerial career at the highest level.

His contract is due to run through August 2027, giving him the opportunity to oversee the team across its next international cycle and to build a squad capable of competing in regional and continental qualification.
