Raul Asencio starts intensive treatment as Real Madrid injury fears return

Raul Asencio is undergoing a final course of treatment in an attempt to prevent a lengthy spell on the sidelines after a recurring leg problem resurfaced at Real Madrid.

The defender has recovered from a quadriceps injury that kept him out earlier this season, but the same leg is now causing further concern.

The issue is not new. Asencio has been dealing with it since last season and it has not healed as fully as expected. According to Spanish newspaper Marca, the problem has led him to begin a new treatment programme at Real Madrid’s Valdebebas training ground.

Asensio has already completed several sessions aimed at easing the pressure on the affected area and accelerating the healing process.

If the treatment does not produce the expected improvement, surgery will be required. That would leave the Real Madrid defender facing an estimated absence of between six and eight weeks.

The problem had been worsening for some time and already affected the closing stages of last season, when Real Madrid were dealing with a significant number of injuries.

Asencio chose to continue playing despite the risks because his team needed defenders. When the possibility of taking time out was raised, he said: “I’m not stopping now, impossible.”

It was a courageous decision, but one that placed considerable strain on his body during a difficult period for the club.

A compromise was eventually found to allow him to remain available. Asencio underwent a minimally invasive procedure intended to remove abnormal cells from scar tissue around the bone in his leg, where poorly healed bone growths had developed.

However, the healing process proved insufficient and there was a risk that the bone could weaken, potentially turning the crack into a fracture. The medical team therefore opted for treatment that would give the area more time to recover and avoid immediate surgery.

That approach enabled Asencio to continue supporting the team. Once the season ended, the priority became rest and recovery, with a simple plan for the summer: allow the leg to heal after months of intense activity.

The expectation was that the bone would respond positively to several months of rest. Instead, Asencio’s condition deteriorated, leaving the problem threatening his season once again.

The issue may have been aggravated by the quadriceps injury in the same leg, which forced the player to adjust his training load and exercises during pre-season.

Asencio is now being given one final opportunity to recover without undergoing an operation. Treatment has already started at Valdebebas, with the first sessions completed.

The aim is to reduce pressure on the injured area and allow it to heal naturally. The chances of that approach succeeding, however, are considered limited.

If the latest treatment fails, Asencio will undergo surgery and is expected to miss approximately two months.
