‘I wanted to play my game’ – Chidera Ejuke opens up after scoring for Sevilla
Chidera Ejuke has hailed Sevilla’s strong start to the LaLiga season after coming off the bench to score in their convincing 3-1 win over Athletic Club at San Mamés on Saturday.
The Super Eagles winger made his mark after being introduced as a substitute, scoring Sevilla’s second goal as they secured consecutive victories to begin the campaign with a perfect six points.
His timely contribution comes after an unsettled pre-season, during which he was omitted from Sevilla’s training camp in the Netherlands while the club considered his future and a potential transfer.
Ejuke subsequently trained away from the main group before being reintegrated into first-team activities shortly before the league campaign got underway.
The 27-year-old has since responded positively to the opportunity handed to him by coach Luis García Plaza, delivering another encouraging display with his goal against Athletic.
‘I wanted to play my game’
Ejuke said his focus was simply to remain ready and make a meaningful contribution whenever he was given the chance to play.
“We’re happy with the game. Six points in two games and a good team spirit. We’re already thinking about the next one,” Ejuke told the club’s website.
The Nigerian international also emphasised the importance of putting the team first, regardless of his role during matches.
“I always try to be available to help the team in any way I can. In the two games we’ve played here, I’ve been able to help the team, and I’m very happy about that. I wanted to play my game, stay focused, and give it my all,” he added.
Sevilla continue perfect run
Ejuke’s strike was one of three goals that powered Sevilla to an impressive away victory over Athletic Club.
Oso put the visitors in front before Ejuke doubled their advantage, giving Sevilla greater control of the contest.
Isaac Romero later added a third to effectively put the result beyond doubt, while Aitor Paredes scored Athletic’s consolation goal.
For Ejuke, the goal provides an encouraging response following a difficult period in the build-up to the season and could strengthen his position in García Plaza’s plans.
After two matches, Sevilla have maximum points, and Ejuke will now look to build on his early contribution as he fights for a more regular role in the team.
