Arteta hails Eberechi Eze's determination and hunger at Arsenal

Theo Walcott has warned Eberechi Eze that small decisions could determine whether he earns a regular starting place at Arsenal this season.

The Gunners opened their Premier League title defence in emphatic fashion on Saturday, beating Coventry City 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium to underline their ambitions of retaining the crown.

The victory followed Arsenal’s success over Manchester City in the Community Shield earlier this month, giving Mikel Arteta’s side a strong start to the new campaign and sending an early warning to their title rivals.

Eze urged to impress Arteta

Eze, who scored 10 goals during his first season with Arsenal in 2025/26, was introduced from the bench in the closing stages against Coventry.

Despite his attacking quality, the England international is yet to establish himself as a regular starter, with competition for places intensifying following Arsenal’s summer recruitment.

Arteta has added Christos Tzolis, Bruno Guimaraes and Ezri Konsa to an already deep squad, leaving several established players battling for opportunities.

The Arsenal manager used all five substitutes against Frank Lampard’s Coventry, highlighting the strength of his options and the challenge facing players hoping to force their way into the first XI.

Walcott questions late free-kick

Former Arsenal winger Walcott believes Eze must make the most of every opportunity he receives, particularly when introduced as a substitute.

The 36-year-old was critical of Eze’s decision to attempt an ambitious free-kick late in the match, suggesting Arteta could view such moments when assessing whether a player is ready for a bigger role.

“When the subs came on, that’s their chance to show Mikel, ‘don’t forget about me’. I felt some could have done a little bit more.

“It’s a reminder to the guys who aren’t starting that it’s a big, deep squad. If you want to be in the starting line-up, there are standards Mikel will look into.”

Walcott believes Eze’s decision-making could become particularly important as Arteta assesses his squad throughout a demanding season.

“Eze having that shot at the end. I’m not sure Arteta will be happy with it. I know it’s a small thing, but these are little details that he will look into each individual player if he’s going to be with them throughout the season, that’s just a sign to see.”

No room for complacency

With Arsenal competing on multiple fronts, opportunities may be limited for players who fail to meet Arteta’s expectations.

Eze’s ability is unlikely to be questioned, but Walcott’s warning underlines the importance of discipline and decision-making as Arsenal look to maintain their title challenge.

The message is clear: with Arteta commanding one of the deepest squads in the Premier League, even seemingly minor moments could influence who earns a starting role.
