Paris video puts Walid Regragui back in the Qatar spotlight

A video showing former Morocco manager Walid Regragui chatting with Qatar Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Paris has prompted widespread speculation about the coach’s next move.

The footage, which appears to have been recorded on an amateur camera, was shared by the PSG Maroc account on X. It shows Regragui and the Emir seated together on a terrace, speaking casually across a table.

No details have been given about the reason for their meeting, but the images quickly attracted attention online. Some users have already suggested that Regragui could be considered as a potential successor to Julen Lopetegui, the current manager of the Qatar national team.

Regragui, who previously managed Wydad Casablanca, has been without a club or national-team contract since ending his spell in charge of Morocco.

The French-Moroccan coach took over the Atlas Lions in August 2022, shortly before the World Cup in Qatar. Under his leadership, Morocco produced one of the most notable campaigns in the tournament’s history, reaching the semi-finals before finishing fourth the best-ever World Cup result by an African nation.

His time in charge also included a record run of 19 consecutive victories between June 2024 and October 2025. Morocco went on to reach the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil, two years after being eliminated in the last 16 of the previous edition in Ivory Coast.

Morocco lost that final 1-0 after extra time to Senegal in Rabat on 18 January. Regragui officially left his position on 5 March, but was later declared African champion alongside his players after a decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeal Jury on 17 March.

Since leaving Morocco, the 50-year-old has been linked with a number of positions. Reports have connected him with Real Madrid, Ghana, clubs in the Arab world and Paris FC, although none of those possibilities has led to an appointment.

A move to Paris FC appeared particularly close to being completed, but Regragui’s arrival ultimately fell through at the last minute.

The meeting with Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has therefore renewed interest in the coach’s future, although the video itself does not confirm that any formal discussions about the Qatar job took place. The online reaction has been driven by the timing of the encounter and Regragui’s continued availability after his successful period with Morocco.
