Manchester United’s rebuilding project jolted by opening-day defeat at Hull City
Manchester United’s heavily backed rebuild suffered an immediate setback as they began the new season with a 2-0 defeat by newly promoted Hull City, raising fresh doubts over whether the club can return to the upper reaches of the Premier League.
United went into the campaign with renewed expectations after investing almost €100m in their squad during the summer transfer window. However, their first competitive fixture exposed several of the weaknesses that had emerged during pre-season and left manager Michael Carrick acknowledging that his side needed to improve in a number of areas.
The club’s main recruitment focus was midfield, where United signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea for €58m and Youri Tielemans for €41m. Those arrivals were intended to help replace Casemiro, while the club are still waiting for Carlos Baleba to join.
Despite that spending, the new midfield partnership failed to establish control against Hull City. Bruno Fernandes was unable to exert his usual influence, while Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu struggled to provide the attacking threat United required.
The problems were not limited to the centre of the pitch. United’s defence looked vulnerable throughout the match, and Luke Shaw was unable to produce the level expected of him on the left side. In attack, the visitors created little danger, with only a small number of attempts offering any encouragement.
Marcus Rashford made his first appearance, but his introduction did not alter the direction of the game. United remained unable to find a way back into the contest and ultimately left Hull with a result that intensified concerns over their readiness for the season.
Carrick admitted afterwards that his team had lacked the “spark” needed to turn opportunities into goals. His assessment reflected a difficult evening for a side expected to show immediate progress after a significant summer investment.
Uneven pre-season form
United’s preparations had already produced mixed results. They lost 1-0 to Wrexham before responding with a 5-0 victory over Rosenborg. They then defeated Atletico Madrid 2-1, drew with Paris Saint-Germain and Leeds, and suffered a heavy 4-2 loss to AC Milan.
The defeat by Hull City therefore reinforced rather than created the concerns surrounding the team. The failure of Santos and Tielemans to dominate midfield, combined with the limited contribution from United’s senior attacking players, suggested that the squad’s structural issues had not been resolved during the close season.
The result also places the Manchester United board under early pressure. The club’s stated ambitions are considerably greater than the performance at Hull suggested, with chief executive Omar Berrada saying in June 2025 that United could compete for the Premier League title within two or three years.
That target now appears increasingly distant if the team continues to perform at this level. United’s next opportunity to respond comes against Bournemouth in their following league fixture.
