Bayern Munich provide update on Musiala after two pre-season collapses

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has explained why Jamal Musiala collapsed twice during recent friendly matches, saying a minor change to the midfielder’s treatment plan caused side effects.

Musiala, 23, fell ill during games against RB Leipzig and 1. FC Heidenheim within the space of four days. Bayern have now offered reassurance about the Germany international’s condition, with Kompany outlining the medical circumstances behind the incidents before Saturday’s German Super Cup meeting with Borussia Dortmund.

Musiala said earlier this week that he was receiving treatment for a “neurological disorder”. He described the episodes associated with the condition as “temporary, brief, but easily treatable”.

Bayern have confirmed that signs of the condition were present before the World Cup. The club were aware of the issue before the start of last season, but it has not affected Musiala’s performances in competitive matches to date.

Speaking ahead of the meeting with Borussia Dortmund, Kompany said he had discussed the matter with Musiala before deciding to make the details public.

“I spoke to Jamal, and he said: No problem, you can say that,” said the Belgium manager.

Kompany then explained that a slight adjustment to Musiala’s medication had led to the two collapses.

“He made a slight change to his treatment, which caused some side effects,” Kompany added. “It is completely normal to make changes to a treatment plan. That was the reason he collapsed twice in four days against Leipzig and Heidenheim.”

The Bayern manager said the club had since gained a clearer understanding of the situation and had taken decisions in consultation with leading specialists.

“The initial shock for us happened some time ago, so we do not talk about it very often at the moment,” Kompany said. “We have received much more information since then and made decisions with the help of leading experts. Jamal has everyone’s support.”

The club’s comments are intended to calm concerns surrounding one of their most important players. Musiala has continued to be regarded as a key part of Bayern’s team despite the recent incidents, while the club maintains that his condition has not disrupted his involvement in official fixtures.

The German Super Cup against Borussia Dortmund will provide the next significant test for Bayern as they prepare for the new campaign. Kompany’s explanation indicates that the collapses were linked to the alteration in Musiala’s treatment rather than a deterioration that had previously affected his competitive performances.
