Egypt’s Football Association, under the leadership of Jamal Allam, finds itself at a crossroads in selecting the next national team coach.
Following the dismissal of Portuguese coach Rui Vitoria, who faced criticism after Egypt’s round of 16 loss to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mohamed Youssef has been appointed as the interim coach.
Several prominent names have surfaced as potential successors, with discussions and negotiations ongoing behind the scenes.
A source within the Football Association revealed to BBC Sport, “Frenchman Herve Renard, the head coach of the French women’s national team, has agreed to take charge of the Egyptian national team, but only after the Paris 2024 Olympics.
His current commitment to coaching the French women’s team is a factor, and we await the Football Association’s response following the conclusion of the Olympic Games.”
The source continued, “There is ongoing communication between the Portuguese Carlos Queiroz, the former head coach of the Egyptian national team, and Ahmed Diab, the president of the Clubs Association.
Queiroz might make a return, and other notable names in consideration include Belgian Hugo Broos, the head coach of the South African national team, Frenchman Sébastien Desabre, the head coach of the Democratic Republic of Congo national team, and Bosnian Vahid Halilhodzic.”
The appointment of the new coach is expected to be decided soon, with the Football Association considering nominations from agents and marketing companies.
A series of continuous meetings will be held to finalize the decision after the conclusion of the Africa Cup of Nations, set to end in Ivory Coast on February 11th.
