Nathaniel Opoku makes Northampton switch after Leicester spell

Ghana forward Nathaniel Opoku has moved from Leicester to Northampton, beginning a new League Two chapter with a contract running until 30 June 2029.

The 25-year-old centre-forward completed the move on 21 August 2026, leaving Leicester’s League One squad for Northampton Town. No transfer fee has been disclosed.

Opoku joins the Cobblers after spending the 2025-26 season on loan at Newport County. He returned to Leicester at the end of that campaign before making the move to Northampton.

The Accra-born striker originally joined Leicester in January 2023 after leaving American college side Syracuse. He then spent time on loan with Belgian club OH Leuven before returning to the English club in June 2024.

Opoku’s career has also included a loan spell with Ventura County, following his move there from the LW Blue Raiders in 2022. He joined the Blue Raiders as a free agent after leaving Ventura County.

The forward is 1.83m tall and has been listed primarily as a centre-forward. He now moves into Northampton’s squad for the 2026-27 League Two campaign, with the club’s season also including the EFL Cup.

His previous campaign at Newport was a temporary spell from Leicester, while his latest move represents a change of club and division within the English game. Northampton are in League Two after Opoku’s most recent season was spent with Newport and Leicester remained his parent club.

The transfer was completed on 21 August, and Opoku is contracted to Northampton until the summer of 2029.
