Arthur Okonkwo: Charlton secure Championship loan deal for Wrexham goalkeeper

Nigeria-England goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has joined Charlton from Wrexham on loan, giving the Championship club a new option between the posts.

The 24-year-old has signed a deal that runs until 30 June 2027, with the move completed on 20 August 2026. Both Charlton and Wrexham are competing in the Championship this season.

Okonkwo returns to a division he knows from his time with Wrexham, whom he joined permanently from Arsenal in July 2024 following an earlier loan spell. His latest switch keeps him in England’s second tier while moving him to Charlton for the 2026-27 campaign.

He joined Wrexham for the first time on loan in September 2023 and was part of the club’s promotion success during the 2023-24 season. That temporary spell followed a loan at Austrian side Sturm Graz, where he won the Austrian Cup in 2022-23.

Okonkwo began his career in Arsenal’s academy, progressing from the club’s youth set-up to Arsenal Under-23s and then the senior side. He also spent time on loan at Crewe Alexandra before his move to Sturm Graz.

The goalkeeper is listed at 1.98m and favours his right foot. His arrival adds experience from several different leagues and club environments to Charlton’s squad, while his return agreement means he is contracted to go back to Wrexham at the end of the loan.

Okonkwo’s market value is listed at €5m, although no transfer fee has been given for the temporary move. His contract with Charlton is scheduled to end on 30 June 2027, matching the recorded conclusion of the loan arrangement.

He has not yet made an appearance for Charlton in the 2026-27 Championship or EFL Cup, with the transfer taking place at the start of the campaign. The move therefore marks the beginning of his spell at The Valley rather than a mid-season change after competitive action for the club.

Okonkwo’s career has included senior football in England and Austria, along with honours at Wrexham and Sturm Graz. He now joins Charlton from Wrexham on a loan running through to 30 June 2027.
