Langelihle Phili reveals emotion behind first Kaizer Chiefs goal

Langelihle Phili says scoring his first goal for Kaizer Chiefs against Mamelodi Sundowns was a “huge” moment, with the midfielder admitting his celebration reflected the significance of finding the net against the reigning African champions.

Phili spoke to Kaizer Chiefs’ media department after the landmark goal, which came in last weekend’s meeting with Mamelodi Sundowns. For the youngster, the occasion carried particular weight because of the stature of both the match and his opponents.

“Obviously, being at such a great football institution as Kaizer Chiefs, you want to play in the big games, so being able to play and score against Mamelodi Sundowns, the African champions, was huge for me, as could be seen from my celebration.”

The goal marked an important personal milestone for Phili, but he stressed that his priorities remain centred on contributing to the team rather than collecting individual recognition.

He said consistency would depend on his willingness to follow the guidance of the coaching staff, learn from more experienced team-mates and continue working to improve.

“Still, my overriding aim is to help the team in any way possible. In order to maintain my form consistently, I must just keep listening to the coach and the technical team, learning from my teammates and just keep trying hard every day to become a better version of myself.”

Phili also discussed his connection with the Kaizer Chiefs supporters, whose backing he has sought since joining the club at Naturena.

The midfielder said earning the affection of the Amakhosi faithful had been one of his main priorities after arriving, and he intends to repay their support through his performances and commitment.

“It’s the best feeling ever to be loved by supporters. When I arrived at the Club, my priority was to earn the love of the fans. I’ll keep on trying to please them through maximum effort, which is something they appreciate.”

His comments underline the two sides of the moment: the personal satisfaction of scoring a first goal for Kaizer Chiefs and the wider responsibility he feels as a player representing the club.

Although the strike against Mamelodi Sundowns provided a memorable highlight, Phili made clear that he views it as part of a longer process. His focus is now on maintaining his form, continuing to learn from the technical team and his team-mates, and helping Kaizer Chiefs whenever called upon.

The goal also strengthened the bond between Phili and the supporters, who have played an important part in his early experience at Naturena. For the young midfielder, their appreciation is something he hopes to continue earning through the level of effort he brings to the team.
