Ouaddou urges Orlando Pirates players to follow Lungu’s impressive start
Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has praised new signing Ghampani Lungu for making an immediate impact, while calling on more of his players to contribute in front of goal.
The winger joined the Buccaneers from Siwelele during the current transfer window, arriving as part of a group of new signings brought in to strengthen the squad.
Lungu, 27, has scored twice in his first four appearances for Orlando Pirates. One of those goals came in the MTN8 quarter-final, while the other was scored across three league matches.
His early form has pleased Ouaddou, particularly after Orlando Pirates’ 3-0 victory over Chippa United on Sunday. The result gave the coach further evidence that his side can be effective in the final third, but he does not want the team to depend too heavily on one player for goals.
“You can guess that I’m a happy coach when we find the net, because I’ve been asking for efficiency since last season,” said Ouaddou.
“So, you can imagine that when the players find the net like that, I’m very happy. It helps the team.
“And to know that we can be dangerous in the last third, and that you have some players that can be very dangerous, I think it’s very good for us.
“But not only him, I need to see other players as well to show themselves in this last third, because we have a lot of quality players.”
Ouaddou’s comments underline his satisfaction with Lungu’s contribution since moving to the club, while also making clear that he expects the rest of the squad to show the same attacking influence.
The coach said he was pleased whenever Orlando Pirates found the net, reflecting his long-standing demand for greater efficiency. However, the 3-0 win over Chippa United also reinforced his belief that the team possesses several players capable of creating danger in the final third.
Lungu’s two goals have come in four appearances since his move from Siwelele, with his first weeks at Orlando Pirates providing a strong beginning to his new chapter. His form has placed him among the new arrivals making an early impression as the club works to strengthen its squad.
Ouaddou’s message is that Lungu’s start should encourage greater responsibility across the team. While the coach welcomed the winger’s goals and the attacking threat he offers, he also stressed that Orlando Pirates have enough quality players to produce more regular contributions in the final third.
