Orlando Pirates cruise past Chippa United to return to Premiership summit

Orlando Pirates returned to winning ways with a convincing 3-0 victory over Chippa United at Kings Park Stadium on Sunday, moving them to the top of the Premiership table.

The Buccaneers had been held to a disappointing draw by AmaZulu on Wednesday, but responded with three second-half goals to claim all three points. Gamphani Lungu, Lebone Seema and Daniel Msendami were the scorers as Pirates secured a decisive win.

The result leaves Pirates level on seven points with Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu, although they lead the three-way group because of their superior goal difference.

For Chippa United, the defeat extended their winless run to three matches. The Chilli Boys had previously drawn with Golden Arrows and Richards Bay, a sequence that is likely to increase the early pressure on coach Brandon Truter.

Pirates started the match with greater attacking intent and spent much of the opening period looking for a way through a Chippa defence that sat deep. The home side’s compact shape limited the visitors to attempts from distance, while Pirates struggled to produce the kind of creativity required to break the deadlock.

Chippa looked most dangerous when they won possession and attempted to attack on the transition. They came close to catching Pirates on the break on two occasions, despite the Buccaneers having more of the ball and territory.

The hosts began to grow into the contest midway through the first half. Sirgio Kammies tested Sipho Chaine with a teasing effort from outside the penalty area, forcing the goalkeeper to dive towards his post to keep the ball out.

Oswin Appollis was one of Chippa’s more energetic performers before the interval, but the rest of the team struggled to match his level. Pirates, meanwhile, lacked invention in midfield and were unable to create enough clear opportunities during their first-half dominance.

The visitors produced the clearest chance of the game soon after the restart. Chippa surrendered possession in their own half, allowing Patrick Maswanganyi to beat a defender, but his attempt was stopped by goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Pirates’ sustained pressure finally produced a breakthrough shortly before the hour mark. Lungu found space outside the box and struck to give the Buccaneers the lead, registering his second goal of the season.

The advantage was doubled only three minutes later. Deon Hotto delivered a corner into the area, where Seema had been left unmarked. He met the cross with a free header to put Pirates firmly in control.

The second half was a marked improvement from the visitors, who played with greater intensity and energy after the break. Chippa struggled to cope with the high pressing of the Buccaneers and found it increasingly difficult to regain control.

Pirates continued to dictate proceedings and added a third late on. Substitute Msendami took advantage of another error in the Chippa defence to complete an emphatic victory and send his side to the top of the standings.
