Juventus make improved offer for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez

Juventus have moved closer to signing Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez after submitting a new offer for the Argentina international during the summer transfer window.

The Athletic reports that Aston Villa have received the latest proposal, which is worth 10m euros in total. The bid consists of 7m euros in guaranteed payment, with a further 3m euros available in performance-related add-ons linked to the Italian club’s success.

That offer falls short of Aston Villa’s demand for the full 10m euros to be guaranteed before they agree to sell the 33-year-old goalkeeper. However, negotiations between the two clubs are understood to be progressing, with the gap between their positions narrowing.

An agreement could be reached in the coming period, while Martinez’s personal terms are not expected to prevent the transfer from being completed.

The Athletic previously reported that Martinez was in discussions over a possible departure from Aston Villa this summer. Those talks have developed at the same time as the Premier League club’s interest in Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.

As the negotiations over Martinez’s exit have advanced, Aston Villa have begun considering a move for Suzuki. The Japan international could cost about 30m euros and is being viewed as a potential replacement for Martinez at Villa Park.

The uncertainty surrounding Martinez’s future at Aston Villa is not new. Manchester United attempted to sign him last summer and made a loan offer during the final days of the transfer window.

Aston Villa rejected that proposal, after which Manchester United signed Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp instead.

Martinez remains under contract with Aston Villa until June 2029, having extended his deal in August 2024. Despite the possibility of a move to Juventus, he has continued to be an important figure for the club since arriving from Arsenal in September 2020.

He made 44 appearances in all competitions for Aston Villa last season, helping the club finish fourth in the Premier League and win the Europa League.

Martinez was also one of Argentina’s leading players at the most recent World Cup. He started all eight of his country’s matches, with Argentina losing 1-0 to Spain in the final.

Since moving to Aston Villa, Martinez has played 256 matches for the club in all competitions. His departure would represent another significant change to the squad during a busy summer of restructuring.

Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne have already left Aston Villa, while Ezri Konsa’s future remains uncertain. The club would therefore face the task of replacing one of its most established players if Juventus can complete a deal for Martinez.

Juventus’ new bid indicates that the Italian club remain committed to securing the goalkeeper, while Aston Villa must decide whether the offer is sufficient to allow Martinez to leave. The negotiations are continuing, with both sides appearing closer to an agreement than before.
