Mashego backs Mosimane to lead Bafana Bafana to greater success

Former Orlando Pirates forward Katlego Mashego believes Pitso Mosimane has gained enough experience to guide South Africa’s national team, Bafana Bafana, towards greater achievements when he returns to the post.

Mosimane is set to take charge of the national team again after receiving the endorsement of the South African Football Association (SAFA) National Executive Committee (NEC). He will replace Hugo Broos, whose contract expired at the end of July 2026.

The appointment will mark Mosimane’s first return to the Bafana Bafana head-coach position since his initial spell in charge between 2010 and 2012.

Mashego feels the former coach has developed significantly during his time away from the national team and is now better equipped to handle the demands of the job.

“Jingle” brings a substantial amount of experience to the role, having developed further since his previous tenure. Mashego comments to KickOff, “He now has a better understanding of what it entails to coach Bafana Bafana. He is taking over from a coach who has performed well for the national team.”

Broos’ contract ended after his period in charge of Bafana Bafana, during which he was described by Mashego as a coach who had performed well for the national side. Mosimane will therefore return to a team that has been managed effectively by his predecessor, while also bringing his own experience and approach to the role.

Mashego said Mosimane’s objective would be to improve the national team’s performances and build on what he has achieved since leaving Bafana Bafana.

Mashego further stated, “Mosimane aims to enhance the national team’s performance. Since leaving Bafana Bafana, he has achieved significant milestones. While he and Hugo Broos are different coaches, Mosimane, being South African, understands the local players better.”

The former Orlando Pirates forward also highlighted Mosimane’s familiarity with South African footballers as an important factor in his return. Although Mosimane and Broos have different coaching styles, Mashego believes Mosimane’s nationality and previous involvement with the national team mean he understands the local players more closely.

Mosimane previously led Bafana Bafana from 2010 to 2012. His return will give him another opportunity to improve his record with the national team, according to Mashego, while SAFA’s NEC has backed him to succeed Broos.

Mashego concluded by expressing confidence that Mosimane is ready to take on the responsibility again and that the appointment is appropriate for the football association.

He concluded, “I believe Pitso Mosimane is prepared to lead Bafana Bafana again. This appointment is well-suited for SAFA, as Mosimane seeks to improve his record with the national team.”
