Mamelodi Sundowns name starting XI for Kaizer Chiefs clash
Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed their starting line-up for this afternoon’s Betway Premiership meeting with Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium, as they continue their pursuit of Orlando Pirates at the top of the table.
Sundowns arrive in Johannesburg looking to maintain their perfect start to the season. The reigning South African giants have played twice so far, beating TS Galaxy 3-2 in the league before overcoming Polokwane City 3-2 after extra time in their MTN8 quarter-final.
The results have delivered six goals, but Sundowns’ defensive record remains a concern. They have conceded four times in those two matches, a return that will be unfamiliar to a side renowned for its organisation at the back.
Miguel Cardoso’s team are also attempting to respond after a disappointing campaign by their high standards. Sundowns finished second last season and, for the first time in nine years, did not win the league title. A victory against Kaizer Chiefs would provide an early boost as they seek to reclaim the Betway Premiership crown.
The contest at FNB Stadium is one of the biggest fixtures in South African football, with Sundowns facing one of their major rivals in front of a packed crowd.
Recent history favours Sundowns. They have won six of the past 10 league meetings with Kaizer Chiefs, while the other four matches have ended in draws. During that unbeaten run, Sundowns scored 17 goals and conceded only five.
A win would also take Cardoso’s side to the top of the league table, adding further importance to the afternoon’s fixture.
Sundowns have selected Williams in goal, with Kekana, Johannes and Mudau forming part of the defensive line. Modiba, Aubaas, Allende and Mkhulise are also named in the starting team, while Van Wyk, Matthews and Leon complete the XI.
The Mamelodi Sundowns starting line-up is:
Sundowns XI: Williams, Kekana, Johannes, Mudau, Modiba, Aubaas, Allende, Mkhulise, Van Wyk, Matthews, Leon.
Substitutes: Goss, Mvala, Lunga, Ndlovu, Kekana, Zwane, Mokoena, Mailula, Mothiba.
The fixture gives Sundowns the opportunity to extend their strong recent record against Kaizer Chiefs, preserve their unbeaten start and move into first place in the early Betway Premiership standings.
