Tottenham close in on Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo deal

Tottenham are reportedly close to signing Liverpool and Netherlands winger Cody Gakpo, with the player said to have agreed personal terms on a contract running until 2031.

According to transfer journalist Nicolo Schira, Tottenham have reached an agreement with Gakpo over the details of his proposed contract and are now working towards a final deal with Liverpool.

Gakpo is understood to be the number one transfer target of Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi. The Italian coach is keen to strengthen his attacking options as the club prepare for the new season.

The 26-year-old has made 180 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 50 goals and providing 23 assists. His potential move to Tottenham would represent one of the most significant deals of the current transfer window.

Tottenham have officially completed six signings so far: Sandro Tonali, Matias Fernandez, Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, Andrew Robertson and Martin Dubravka.

Gakpo also played a prominent role for the Netherlands at the 2026 World Cup. He featured in four matches, scoring three goals and providing one assist.

The Netherlands reached the round of 32, where they were eliminated by Morocco on penalties after the match ended 1-1. Gakpo’s performances at international level have further strengthened his reputation as one of the leading attacking players in European football.

Tottenham have played five matches during their pre-season preparations. They began with a 1-0 victory over Macarthur before beating Auckland 2-0.

They then drew 1-1 with Sydney and won the resulting penalty shootout. Tottenham followed that with an impressive 2-1 victory against Chelsea, before ending their most recent friendly with a 1-1 draw against Getafe.

Their final pre-season test will come against Hoffenheim, with the fixture scheduled to take place over two days, on Saturday and Sunday.

Tottenham finished last season in 17th place with 41 points. They will begin the new campaign against Brentford on Saturday, 22 August, at the Gtech Community Stadium.

A deal for Gakpo would give De Zerbi another major attacking option before that opening fixture, although Tottenham must first reach a final agreement with Liverpool before the transfer can be completed.
