Aston Villa step up pursuit of DR Congo star Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Aston Villa have stepped up their pursuit of DR Congo and West Ham United full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the current transfer window.

Having captured Matteo Ruggeri, the Premier League outfit immediate priority is secure a new right-back, with the former Manchester United star as a top target.

The Premier League club have been working to reinforce both full-back positions this summer, and the imminent arrival of Ruggeri is expected to address the need for additional quality on the left flank. Once the Italian defender’s transfer is formally completed, Villa are expected to turn their attention towards Wan-Bissaka.

Interest in the 28-year-old is understood to be genuine and concrete, with Villa keen to bring in the DR Congo international to provide competition and greater depth on the right side of Emery’s defence.

Wan-Bissaka has established himself as an experienced Premier League defender, having previously represented Manchester United before joining West Ham. His defensive ability, particularly in one-on-one situations, has made him an attractive option for Villa as they look to build a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts.

During the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, Wan-Bissaka made 25 appearances for West Ham and contributed three assists. His experience at the highest level could make him a valuable addition to Emery’s squad.

Villa’s pursuit of the defender could, however, depend on negotiations with West Ham. Transfermarkt currently places Wan-Bissaka’s market value at around €15 million, giving an indication of the potential financial scale of a deal.

With Ruggeri set to arrive from Atlético Madrid, Aston Villa’s attention is now expected to shift firmly towards the right-back position. The club’s objective is clear: strengthen both flanks and create genuine competition for places as Emery prepares his squad for another demanding season.

Wan-Bissaka has consequently emerged as the leading candidate for the right-back role, and Villa could now step up negotiations as they seek to turn their interest in the former Manchester United defender into a concrete transfer.
