Ferran Torres to join Paris Saint-Germain after Barcelona accept hard-fought deal

Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona have reached a final agreement for the transfer of Spain forward Ferran Torres to the Parc des Princes, with the fee set to fall just short of €50m after difficult negotiations.

According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Barcelona initially sought about €60m for the deal but eventually accepted a final offer from Paris Saint-Germain that came close to that figure.

Paris Saint-Germain had originally been prepared to pay no more than €40m. The French club threatened to walk away from the negotiations, arguing that it had already determined the player’s future and that Torres would leave Barcelona as a free agent in a year if an agreement was not reached.

Although Paris Saint-Germain had already raised €159m through player sales this summer, the club was unwilling, on principle, to reach the €50m mark for Torres. Its final proposal, delivered to Barcelona on Wednesday, included a number of financial conditions and details designed to keep the total below that threshold.

The structure of the offer included bonuses and other variables that ultimately became fixed payments. However, a key condition was that the overall value of the transfer must not reach €50m, even though the final figure came very close to it.

Barcelona ultimately judged the agreement to be a favourable outcome. The Catalan club will save money on Torres’ wages, receive income from the transfer and record a net profit from his departure. The sale is also regarded as crucial to Barcelona’s ability to register the new signings made so far this summer.

The club had recognised from the outset that negotiations would be challenging once the decision was made to sell Torres. The forward had not been viewed by manager Hansi Flick as a strategic option.

Barcelona had nevertheless hoped Paris Saint-Germain would move decisively from the beginning and complete the signing quickly. Instead, the approach from the French club has reflected the changes made to its sporting administration since Luis Campos took charge of the sporting department.

Paris Saint-Germain’s wider objective is to finish the transfer window with a positive financial balance. The club is currently seeking to save as much as possible and has adopted a firm negotiating stance over transfer fees.

The era of lavish spending at Paris Saint-Germain has given way to a more cautious approach, with the club operating under close scrutiny over financial fair play. That pressure has influenced the negotiations for Torres and explains the insistence on keeping the total cost below €50m.

The agreement brings an end to a prolonged process surrounding the future of the Spain international, with Barcelona prioritising the financial benefits of the sale and Paris Saint-Germain securing the player while maintaining control over its spending.
