Currie Cup: Play-off race intensifies as Lions and Boland meet in Round 5

With only three rounds remaining before the semi-finals, the race for Carling Currie Cup Premier Division play-off places reaches a critical stage this weekend, with every log point carrying increasing importance.

Round five begins with two matches on Friday, followed by one fixture on Saturday and another on Sunday. The Lions face Boland Kavaliers at Wits Rugby Stadium, Johannesburg, at 15h00 before log leaders Griquas entertain the Sharks XV in Kimberley at 17h05.

On Saturday, the Pumas host Stormers XXIII at Mbombela Stadium, while the weekend concludes on Sunday when Bulls XV welcome second-placed Cheetahs to Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.

The opening fixture is particularly significant, with both the Lions and Boland Kavaliers still firmly in contention for a semi-final place. The Lions are third in the standings on 12 points after winning two of their opening four matches. Boland sit fifth on 11 points following an encouraging start to their campaign.

The teams endured contrasting fortunes last weekend. The Lions were beaten 31-19 by Griquas in Kimberley, while Boland Kavaliers went down 19-12 to the Sharks XV in Durban after being held at bay by a determined home side.

The Lions remain the competition’s leading attacking team, having scored 140 points and 20 tries in four matches. Their home victories over the Pumas, which ended 52-29, and Bulls XV, a 42-19 success, underlined their attacking threat.

Boland have also established themselves as one of the stronger teams in the division. They opened the season with victories against Bulls XV and Stormers XXIII before suffering narrow defeats by the Pumas and Sharks XV.

The recent rivalry between the sides is finely balanced. The Lions won 67-19 in one of last September’s semi-finals, but that result came after Boland had beaten them 29-10 in Wellington a month earlier. Both teams have won two of their previous five matches in all competitions, setting up a closely fought contest in Johannesburg.

Griquas aim to extend home advantage

Griquas will attempt to maintain their position at the top of the table when they meet the Sharks XV at Suzuki Stadium in Kimberley.

The defending champions moved into first place after their 31-19 win over the Lions last weekend, taking their record to three victories from four games. Their home form has been a major part of that progress.

Griquas have scored 130 points and combined an effective attack with a strong defensive record. Their victories over Bulls XV, Cheetahs and the Lions have placed them among the leading contenders, with their only defeat coming against Stormers XXIII in the opening round.

The Sharks XV, meanwhile, gave their semi-final hopes a lift with a hard-earned victory over Boland. They are seventh, but only two points behind the top four.

After winning away against the Pumas in their opening match, the Durban side lost to Cheetahs and Stormers XXIII before recovering against Boland last weekend. Griquas hold a 3-2 advantage over the Sharks across their previous five meetings in this competition. They also lead 4-3 over the teams’ last seven matches overall and come into the game on a three-match winning run.

Pumas look to build momentum

The Pumas return to Mbombela Stadium knowing a victory against Stormers XXIII could move them decisively into the top-four race.

They produced one of the results of the season last weekend by edging Bulls XV 33-31 at Loftus Versfeld. That important away win lifted the Mpumalanga side into fourth place.

Stormers XXIII suffered a narrow 31-26 defeat against Cheetahs at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town, despite a spirited performance.

The Pumas have begun to find consistency after an uneven opening month. Since losing to the Lions in round two, they have recorded successive victories against Boland and Bulls XV.

Stormers XXIII have shown their quality in parts of the tournament, beating Griquas and later overcoming the Sharks XV. However, heavy defeats by Boland and the recent loss to Cheetahs have left the Cape Town side sixth in the standings.

Stormers XXIII lead the head-to-head record 3-2 over the previous five meetings. Their recent form also favours the Capetonians by the same margin across five matches.

Cheetahs target another win against Bulls XV

The final game of the round sees a resurgent Cheetahs side travel to Pretoria to play Bulls XV, who are still searching for their first victory of the season.

Cheetahs climbed to second place, level on points with Griquas, after their 31-26 win over Stormers XXIII in Cape Town. Bulls XV remain bottom after their dramatic 33-31 defeat by the Pumas last weekend.

The Bloemfontein side have produced one of the strongest records in the competition. Following their opening-round win against the Lions, they have also beaten Sharks XV and Stormers XXIII. Their only defeat was a narrow 24-21 loss away to Griquas.

Cheetahs have scored 124 points and 19 tries in four matches, figures that reinforce their status as genuine title contenders.

Bulls XV are yet to win, but their displays have been more competitive than their position suggests. They pushed both the Pumas and Cheetahs hard and remained in contention deep into several matches.

The teams have each won twice and drawn once in their last five Carling Currie Cup meetings. The current form guide shows Bulls XV losing four of their last five games, while Cheetahs have won three during the same period.
