AmaZulu’s Arthur Zwane praises young side after draw with Orlando Pirates

AmaZulu head coach Arthur Zwane praised his team’s character, organisation and defensive discipline after they held league holders Orlando Pirates to a 1-1 draw at Kings Park Stadium in Durban.

The entertaining Betway Premiership encounter on Wednesday evening saw Pirates produce an energetic performance, but they were unable to find a way past a determined AmaZulu side for a winning goal.

The point lifted the Buccaneers into second place in the league standings, just behind leaders Kaizer Chiefs. AmaZulu also moved up the table and now occupy third position.

Zwane was encouraged by the way his young players handled the demands of a high-profile fixture against one of the strongest teams in the division. Although he accepted that AmaZulu had opportunities they could have converted, the coach considered the result a positive one.

His assessment was shaped partly by the limited turnaround between this match and AmaZulu’s lengthy MTN8 quarter-final defeat by Sekhukhune United on Sunday. Despite that schedule, Usuthu remained organised and competed throughout a match in which the momentum shifted between the two sides.

The AmaZulu coach also recognised the quality shown by Pirates and the chances created by Ouaddou’s team. Facing opponents of that level, Zwane said, brings additional pressure, particularly for a young squad still learning how to control matches when the tempo rises.

He stressed that his players must continue developing their ability to manage demanding moments, especially when a game becomes more intense or the balance of play changes. The draw provided another test of that progress, with AmaZulu ultimately securing a point against the reigning league holders.

The match also included a late incident involving Thandolenkosi Ngwenya and Pirates midfielder Sihle Nduli. Ngwenya, a Zimbabwean forward, made a challenge on Nduli, who had only recently returned after a lengthy spell out with injury.

Zwane addressed the tackle after the game and apologised on behalf of Ngwenya. The incident added to a difficult ending for Pirates, who had been unable to turn their pressure and attacking opportunities into a decisive second goal.

There was controversy earlier in the match when AmaZulu had a first-half goal ruled out for offside. The decision became one of the main talking points of the evening, as it denied Zwane’s side what might have been an important advantage.

Despite that setback, and despite the chances they failed to take, AmaZulu held their shape and resisted Pirates’ efforts to claim all three points. Zwane’s overall response was therefore one of satisfaction with the team’s effort, particularly in light of the short recovery period and the quality of opposition.

The result leaves both clubs near the top of the Betway Premiership, with Pirates second, AmaZulu third and Kaizer Chiefs leading the standings.
