Thapelo Maseko set for FC Copenhagen move after Mamelodi Sundowns agreement

Thapelo Maseko is set to leave Mamelodi Sundowns for Danish club FC Copenhagen after the two sides reportedly reached an agreement for the South African winger.

The 22-year-old’s future at Sundowns had become uncertain after he slipped down the pecking order, but a productive loan spell with AEL Limassol last season helped revive his career and brought renewed interest from clubs outside South Africa.

According to reports, Copenhagen have agreed a fee of 28 million rand for Maseko, who is now being lined up for a move to Europe before the end of the summer transfer window.

Maseko’s Sundowns career reaches a turning point

Maseko joined Sundowns from SuperSport United with the expectation that he would establish himself among the club’s leading attacking players.

His progress at Chloorkop, however, was affected by injuries and competition for places, limiting his opportunities to make a regular impact.

The winger’s fortunes changed during his loan spell at AEL Limassol in Cyprus last season.

Regular playing time allowed Maseko to rediscover his form, while his performances were enough to earn him a return to the South African national team.

He subsequently featured for Bafana Bafana at the Fifa World Cup.

One of the highlights of his international campaign came when Maseko scored the only goal in South Africa’s 1-0 victory over South Korea.

The result secured the side’s historic qualification for the knockout stages.

His performances at club and international level subsequently attracted attention from a number of teams in Europe and North Africa.

Sundowns reluctant to sell to domestic rivals

Interest in Maseko was not limited to clubs outside South Africa, but Sundowns were understood to have been unwilling to allow the player to join one of their domestic rivals.

That position left a move abroad as the more likely option, with Copenhagen now appearing to have won the race for his signature.

iDiski Times reported on Wednesday that the Danish club had reached an agreement worth 28 million rand for the winger.

A move to Copenhagen would give Maseko the chance to continue his career in Europe after his successful spell in Cyprus.

The Danish side would also provide the South African with an opportunity to build on the progress he made after struggling for consistency at Sundowns.

A fresh European opportunity

Maseko’s proposed transfer comes after a period in which his career had appeared to stall.

Injuries had restricted his involvement with Sundowns, but his loan move gave him the chance to regain confidence and regular football.

His performances in Cyprus also helped put him back into the international picture and gave him an opportunity to perform on the World Cup stage.

If the transfer is completed, Maseko will follow the path of Sibusiso Zuma, another South African who made his name with Copenhagen in the early 2000s and went on to achieve legendary status at the Danish club.

For Sundowns, the reported agreement would bring an end to a spell in which Maseko showed flashes of his ability but struggled to secure a permanent place in the starting line-up.

For Maseko, meanwhile, the proposed move offers the chance to turn the progress made during his loan spell into a new chapter in Europe.

The reported deal would see the 22-year-old leave Sundowns after rebuilding his reputation in Cyprus and returning to the national team.

His next challenge will be to establish himself at Copenhagen and maintain the momentum that followed his successful loan spell.
