Paris Saint-Germain deny Aston Villa as European Super Cup crown stays in Paris

Paris Saint-Germain beat Aston Villa 2-1 at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg to win the European Super Cup for a second successive season.

The French side, who entered the match as reigning Champions League winners, secured another European trophy after holding off a second-half challenge from the English club. Aston Villa were competing as the previous season’s Europa League champions.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put Paris Saint-Germain in front in the 20th minute with a powerful finish from inside the penalty area. Aston Villa responded just before half-time when 17-year-old Brian Mago struck from a tight angle in the 45th minute.

Mago’s goal came after an aerial pass from John McGinn and made him the youngest player to score in the history of the European Super Cup.

Paris Saint-Germain restored their advantage in the 61st minute through Desire Doue. The forward finished after receiving a through ball from substitute Ousmane Dembele, who had come on during the match.

The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but the decision was overturned following a review by the video assistant referee. Doue’s effort ultimately proved decisive as Paris Saint-Germain protected their lead until the final whistle.

Aston Villa continued to seek an equaliser and attempted to force their way back into the contest, but Paris Saint-Germain’s defence held firm to complete another Super Cup success.

The result repeats the French club’s achievement from the previous season, when they also claimed the trophy at Tottenham’s expense. That match finished 2-2 after Tottenham had built a 2-0 lead deep into the second half, with Paris Saint-Germain eventually prevailing in a penalty shootout.

This year’s final followed a different pattern. Paris Saint-Germain took control early through Kvaratskhelia, only for Aston Villa to level on the stroke of half-time through Mago. Doue’s second-half goal then settled the contest after the video review.

For Paris Saint-Germain, the victory extends their dominance in the competition and confirms their status as European champions for the second season in a row. Aston Villa, despite matching their opponents for long periods and finding an equaliser before the break, were unable to claim a second major European honour in succession.

The match was played on Wednesday evening at Salzburg’s Red Bull Arena, with Paris Saint-Germain celebrating at the end of a contest decided by Doue’s goal and the successful intervention of the video assistant referee.
