Ronwen Williams urged to take three-match break by former PSL goalkeeper

Former PSL goalkeeper Walter Khumalo believes Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams needs a spell on the sidelines to recover from a demanding run of football and regain his best form.

Williams has been involved in domestic competition, the CAF Champions League, World Cup qualifiers, Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and the World Cup, often with limited time for recovery between fixtures.

The goalkeeper has also shown signs of inconsistency for Mamelodi Sundowns, with minor mistakes noted during domestic matches. Khumalo, who previously played for Black Leopards and Free State Stars, says those errors should not be interpreted as a decline in Williams’ ability.

“There is no decline in Ronwen’s abilities; his quality remains unchanged. He simply needs a period of rest,” Khumalo told KickOff.

Khumalo believes Williams’ workload extends beyond match days. The goalkeeper continues to train daily with his club, adding to the physical demands placed on him during a busy schedule.

“He has been involved in domestic competitions, the CAF Champions League, World Cup qualifiers, and Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, as well as the World Cup, all without sufficient recovery periods,” he said.

“It is also important to consider his daily training with his club, which can contribute to physical fatigue.”

The former PSL goalkeeper has called for Williams to be left out for at least three matches, arguing that a short break could help him recover physically and mentally before returning to action.

“A minimum of three matches should be scheduled as rest to allow the player to rejuvenate both physically and mentally. Once this break is taken, his performance is expected to stabilise,” Khumalo said.

Williams is captain of both Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, making him a regular presence across club and international football. Khumalo says the goalkeeper’s responsibilities, combined with the frequency of matches and training sessions, may have affected his sharpness.

“Ronwen is human, not a machine, and even machines require maintenance. Aside from this, he is a capable goalkeeper who would benefit from a three-day rest period to restore his strength and focus,” he said.

Khumalo’s comments come as Mamelodi Sundowns prepare for another demanding PSL season. The club’s schedule includes domestic commitments as well as continental football, while Williams remains an important figure for Bafana Bafana during international qualification campaigns.

The former Black Leopards and Free State Stars player insists the recommended break is intended to restore Williams’ confidence and concentration rather than question his quality. In his view, time away from competitive matches would allow the captain to return refreshed and help stabilise his performances.
