Manchester City sign Argentina goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Marseille

Manchester City have announced the signing of Argentina goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Olympique de Marseille on a two-year contract.

The 34-year-old will remain at the club until the summer of 2028, returning to Manchester for a second spell after previously spending the 2016-17 season with City.

Rulli was part of the Manchester City squad during that campaign but did not make a first-team appearance at the Etihad Stadium. His return comes with considerable experience at the highest level of domestic and international football.

The goalkeeper has won eight caps for Argentina and was included in the squad that lifted the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa America.

Rulli said he was delighted to have completed his move to Manchester City and join the team managed by Enzo Maresca.

“This is a great opportunity for me, and I had to take it. When you get the chance to join Manchester City, you have to take it,” he said.

“Everyone knows how great this club is. City’s success over such a long period has been impressive. Everyone I spoke to about City told me I had to join because it is a club that sets extremely high standards.”

Rulli began his career in Argentina with Estudiantes before moving to Europe, where he represented several prominent clubs.

His career included spells with Spanish sides Real Sociedad and Villarreal, Dutch club Ajax, and French teams Montpellier and Olympique de Marseille. He most recently played for Marseille before securing his return to Manchester City.

One of the standout moments of Rulli’s career came during his time at Villarreal. He helped the Spanish club win the 2020-21 UEFA Europa League, adding a major European honour to his record.

The move gives Manchester City a goalkeeper with experience across several of Europe’s leading leagues, as well as international tournament pedigree with Argentina. Rulli’s association with the club dates back to his first spell in 2016-17, although he was unable to play for City’s first team during that season.

His latest transfer now sees him return to a club whose long-term success he described as “impressive”, while beginning another chapter after his time with Olympique de Marseille.

Rulli’s international achievements include being part of Argentina’s World Cup-winning squad in 2022 and the team that claimed the 2024 Copa America. He has made eight appearances for his country.

Manchester City’s announcement, made on Wednesday, confirms the goalkeeper’s arrival on a deal running through to the summer of 2028.
