PSG v Aston Villa: Omar Artan makes history as Africa takes centre stage in 2026 UEFA Super Cup

Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa will contest the first European trophy of the 2026-27 season in Salzburg on Wednesday, 12 August, in a UEFA Super Cup that will showcase the growing influence of African football both on the pitch and in the officials’ team.

The match will be refereed by Somalia’s Omar Abdulkadir Artan, whose appointment represents a landmark moment for African refereeing. Artan, named the CAF Referee of the Year in 2025, will take charge of the European showpiece as part of a co-operation agreement between UEFA and the Confederation of African Football.
