Kaizer Chiefs turn MTN8 disappointment into motivation for Sekhukhune test

Kaizer Chiefs defender Thabiso Monyane says their MTN8 quarter-final defeat by Lamontville Golden Arrows has given the squad added motivation ahead of Wednesday’s Betway Premiership meeting with Sekhukhune United.

Amakhosi began their league campaign with a 3-1 victory over newly promoted Kruger United on 1 August. The match was played at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit and appeared to provide Fernando Da Cruz’s side with an encouraging start to the season.

That momentum was checked on Sunday, when Golden Arrows secured a 1-0 win at FNB Stadium to knock Chiefs out of the MTN8.

Monyane believes the setback has nevertheless helped the players identify the areas that require attention before they return to league action just a few days later.

“Of course, all eyes are on Sekhukhune this midweek game. The MTN8 Cup results definitely tested us as a group. We’ve used that as fuel,” Monyane told Kaizer Chiefs media.

“It showed us where we need to work, how we need to sharpen ourselves. And I think it’s a wake-up call for all of us.”

The defender expects Sekhukhune to offer a different type of challenge from the opposition Chiefs have faced so far this season. He described Babina Noko as a physically demanding and well-drilled team, underlining the need for a strong performance at FNB Stadium.

“And the preparation for Sekhukhune, I mean, you know it’s a tough team, hard-running, they’re an organised side. So, it’s going to be a tough encounter, but I trust the boys to do the work, and for sure we’re going to go for it all,” he added.

Wednesday’s fixture will be Chiefs’ first league game at FNB Stadium this season. Monyane says the immediate priority is to secure another three points rather than allow thoughts of the weekend’s opponents to distract the squad.

Chiefs are due to face Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday, but the right-back insists that match is not yet occupying the players’ minds.

“And yes, we know Sundowns are looming in the background, but right now it’s one game at a time. Sekhukhune has our full attention and we’re going there to get the results,” Monyane said.

The encounter will also give Da Cruz further time to develop his Kaizer Chiefs team. The new head coach has already overseen a league victory, but his side must now respond quickly to the disappointment of their MTN8 exit.

Chiefs will host Sekhukhune United, also known as Babina Noko, on Wednesday evening, with Monyane confident the team can use the defeat by Golden Arrows as a learning experience and return to winning ways.
