Themba Zwane says Mamelodi Sundowns must beat TS Galaxy in season opener

Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane says his side must overcome a difficult TS Galaxy test and secure victory in their opening match of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign.

Sundowns begin their league season against the Rockets after missing the opening weekend while completing their pre-season programme. They arrive in Mpumalanga with confidence, however, having beaten Polokwane City 3-2 in the MTN 8 quarter-finals last weekend.

Zwane, known as ‘Mshishi’, made an impact from the bench in that match by assisting the winning goal.

TS Galaxy have already played once in the new league campaign. They opened with a 2-2 draw away to Siwelele and will be seeking their first victory when they face the eight-time league champions.

The fixture also carries added significance for Sundowns because of what happened in the corresponding meeting last season. Galaxy upset Sundowns in that match, a result that helped create an opportunity for Orlando Pirates to end Sundowns’ long period of dominance as domestic champions.

Zwane said the visitors were aware of the challenge awaiting them in Mbombela, despite having had limited time to prepare specifically for the match.

“Obviously, the preparations were not that much,” said Mshishi to Sundowns media.

The veteran midfielder added that Sundowns had watched footage of TS Galaxy after arriving in Mpumalanga, allowing them to refresh their understanding of an opponent who caused them problems previously.

“But upon arrival in Mpumalanga, we got to watch the TS Galaxy game. And we know what we expect, especially the game that we played against them last time when we were here.

“So, we know what we expect, we know what to do, and I think we are ready as a team. To be honest, we have to win against them.

“I think every time when we play against them, they give us a tough time. But to be honest, we know that it’s not going to be easy, but we have to push we are fighting for three points.”

Sundowns’ victory over Polokwane City was secured in the MTN 8, with Zwane contributing after being introduced as a substitute. That result means they enter their first league fixture of the season having already progressed in the cup competition.

Galaxy, meanwhile, will be looking to turn their opening draw into a first league win. Their meeting with Sundowns provides an immediate opportunity to build on last season’s upset and claim another notable result against the reigning domestic power.
