Thapelo Maseko emerges as transfer target

Danish giants FC Copenhagen have reportedly joined the race to sign Mamelodi Sundowns winger Thapelo Maseko as the South African attacker looks set to leave the club this summer.

Maseko’s future at Sundowns has been the subject of growing speculation in recent weeks, with the 22-year-old reportedly involved in contractual discussions with the Premier Soccer League champions.

The clearest indication that Maseko may no longer feature in Sundowns’ plans came when he was left out of the squad that travelled to Austria for the club’s pre-season preparations.

His absence from the European training camp has further fuelled speculation that Sundowns are prepared to facilitate his departure, despite the player still having a contract with the club.

According to reports, FC Copenhagen have now made contact with Sundowns to enquire about the possibility of signing the talented left-footed winger.

The Scandinavian club’s interest could provide Maseko with an opportunity to revive his European career after spending last season on loan in Cyprus.

Maseko had been expected to attract considerable interest from clubs outside South Africa, particularly following his impressive performances for Bafana Bafana at the FIFA World Cup.

His pace, direct running and ability to operate from the left side of the attack have made him one of the promising young attacking players in South African football.

Following his World Cup displays, there was widespread speculation linking the winger with clubs in Europe and the Middle East, including reported interest from Saudi Arabia.

However, despite the numerous links, no concrete transfer materialised, leaving Maseko at Sundowns before he eventually moved to Cyprus on loan last season.

His return to the club has now seemingly coincided with a change in his situation, with Sundowns reportedly making it clear that he is not part of their plans moving forward.

FC Copenhagen’s reported interest could therefore offer the player a fresh start and another opportunity to establish himself in European football.

The Danish giants are known for competing regularly in European competitions, potentially making a move to Copenhagen an attractive proposition for Maseko as he looks to take the next step in his career.

With contact reportedly already established between the two clubs, negotiations could now determine whether the South African international finally secures a permanent move away from Sundowns.

Maseko will be hoping that the latest interest develops into a concrete offer and allows him to put the uncertainty surrounding his future behind him.
