During the weekend’s 2014 World Cup play-offs, an incident caught global attention after the Burkina Faso vs. Algeria match. At the end of the game, a sign emerged stating, “The match is broadcast by Algerian national TV illegally without having obtained any authorization.”
In response, on Monday, the Qatari channel Al Jazeera decided to file a complaint against Algerian national television for airing the match without authorization. Al Jazeera Sport holds the exclusive rights to broadcast the play-off matches for the 2014 World Cup and has expressed its dissatisfaction to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
CAF informed Algerian television officials that it “reserved the right to initiate legal proceedings for this illegal retransmission of the meeting,” signaling potential legal consequences for the unauthorized broadcast.
