Alexis Sanchez set to join CF Montreal in Major League Soccer

Alexis Sanchez has agreed a deal to join CF Montreal, according to The Athletic, with the 37-year-old Chile forward set to continue his career in Major League Soccer.

Sanchez has enjoyed a distinguished career at some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Barcelona, Arsenal, Manchester United and Inter Milan. His move to Montreal comes after spending last season with Sevilla, where he made 28 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals and providing two assists.

The experienced forward arrives at a time when Montreal are looking for an immediate boost to their season. The Canadian club sit 14th in the Eastern Conference, with 16 points from 18 matches. They are seven points adrift of the positions leading to the play-off rounds.

Montreal have scored 24 goals this season, the second-lowest total in the Eastern Conference. Sanchez’s arrival is therefore expected to add experience and attacking quality to a side attempting to close the gap on the play-off places.

Sanchez is Chile’s all-time leading scorer, with 51 international goals, and also holds the national record for appearances after winning 168 caps.

He has collected major honours in Spain, Italy, England and Chile during his career. With Barcelona, he won the Spanish league title in 2013. He later helped Inter Milan to Italian league titles in 2021 and 2024, while also winning two Chilean league championships with Colo-Colo.

At international level, Sanchez played a leading role in Chile’s most successful period. He captained the country to Copa America triumphs in 2015 and 2016, with Chile defeating Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, in both finals.

His honours also include two FA Cup victories with Arsenal, in 2015 and 2017.

The move to Montreal will make Sanchez the latest high-profile player to represent the club in Major League Soccer. Previous notable names to wear the shirt include Ivory Coast international Didier Drogba, Italy defender Alessandro Nesta, Kenya midfielder Victor Wanyama, Argentina forward Ignacio Piatti and Italy striker Marco Di Vaio.

For Montreal, the agreement represents an attempt to strengthen a squad that has struggled for goals and remains outside the Eastern Conference play-off positions. For Sanchez, it provides a new chapter in a career that has taken him from Colo-Colo to some of the most prominent clubs in European football before bringing him to North America.
