Khune backs Kaizer Chiefs’ young stars to make their mark

Itumeleng Khune says Kaizer Chiefs’ emerging players are ready to shape the club’s next chapter, describing the current campaign at Naturena as “a season for youngsters”.

The former Chiefs captain highlighted Luke Baartman after the winger was named Man of the Match in the opening award of the season. Khune believes the 23-year-old has shown that he understands the history and responsibility associated with wearing the number 11 shirt at the South African club.

Baartman has made a strong impression since joining Chiefs, having previously caught Khune’s attention while playing for Cape Town Spurs. The winger scored against Khune at FNB Stadium, and the former goalkeeper used the opportunity to encourage him to remain focused on his development.

“After the game I went to him and I told him that, ‘please keep the focus. Keep working hard. In the near future we’ll see you at Kaizer Chiefs’ – and he did exactly that,” Khune told media.

The number 11 shirt has a notable history at Chiefs. It was previously worn by club greats including the late Emmanuel Scara Ngobse, Jabu Mahlangu and Khama Billiat.

Khune said Baartman is aware of the legacy attached to the number and the standards expected of those who wear the famous black and gold colours.

“He knows what number he’s wearing. He knows what legacy he’s carrying,” Khune added.

Baartman has also developed an effective partnership with Mfundo Vilakazi on the wings. Their performances have strengthened the impression that Chiefs’ younger players can play a significant role this season, although competition for places remains intense.

Asanele Velebayi and Pule Mmodi are both waiting for opportunities, meaning Baartman and Vilakazi will have to maintain their form if they are to keep their places in the team.

Khune’s backing carries particular weight because of his long association with Chiefs and his experience of the demands involved in succeeding at the club. His comments indicate that the coaching staff have confidence in the younger members of the squad and are prepared to rely on them to produce consistently, rather than depending only on established players.

For Baartman, earning recognition early in the season is an important step, but the greater challenge will be sustaining his performances over time. The winger must now demonstrate that his promising start was not temporary if he is to fulfil the expectations attached to his shirt number and his role at Chiefs.

Khune’s assessment places the focus firmly on the club’s young talent, with Baartman and his fellow emerging players being encouraged to write their own part of Kaizer Chiefs’ history.
