Genesio says Nayef Aguerd can still give Marseille ‘a lot’ amid possible exit

Olympique de Marseille manager Bruno Genesio has confirmed that Nayef Aguerd remains part of his plans, but admitted the Moroccan defender could still leave the club during the summer transfer window.

The future of Aguerd is being discussed as negotiations continue over a possible move elsewhere. While Genesio made clear that he values the Morocco international and believes he can make a significant contribution, his comments have added to uncertainty surrounding the defender’s position at Marseille.

Speaking about Aguerd, Genesio said: “Aguerd? He is still with us, but there are negotiations about his departure. You know that I rely on him, and he can give us a lot.”

The comments were reported by Moroccan website Al Botola and come as speculation continues to link Aguerd with a transfer to Real Sociedad.

Negotiations between the parties are understood to be approaching a decisive stage, although a final agreement has yet to be reached over the terms of the deal. Until those details are settled, Aguerd remains a Marseille player and is still included in Genesio’s thinking.

The Marseille manager was also asked about the defender’s recent absence from his plans. Aguerd has returned to full fitness after recovering from injury, but Genesio indicated that his physical condition alone does not explain why the player has not featured recently.

“He has returned from injury, but that is not the reason for his absence,” added Genesio.

That explanation has done little to reduce the focus on Aguerd’s future, particularly with Real Sociedad continuing to be associated with a move for the defender. The negotiations are progressing, but the transfer remains dependent on the two sides reaching a final agreement.

Genesio’s position is therefore twofold: he continues to regard Aguerd as a player capable of helping Marseille, while acknowledging that discussions over a possible departure are under way.

The uncertainty comes despite the defender’s return from injury and his continued presence within Marseille’s plans. For now, Aguerd has not been ruled out of the club’s squad, but the ongoing talks mean his situation could change during the summer window.
