Sam Morsy joins Blackburn Rovers as eighth English club of his career

Blackburn Rovers have signed Egypt international Sam Morsy on a one-year contract, with the 34-year-old joining the Championship club as a free agent.

Morsy becomes the eighth English club of his career after previous spells with Port Vale, Chesterfield, Wigan, Barnsley, Middlesbrough, Ipswich Town and Bristol City.

The midfielder left Bristol City at the end of last season after his one-year contract with the club expired. He made 20 appearances for Bristol City during the campaign and scored once.

Morsy previously played in the Premier League with Ipswich Town, before moving on to Bristol City. His switch to Blackburn gives him another opportunity to continue his career in English football, this time with a club competing in the Championship.

The new Blackburn signing said his family connection with the area had helped make the move particularly significant.

“I know a lot about the club because my mum was born here, and all my grandparents and uncles are here. I know the area, the club and its fans,” Morsy told Blackburn Rovers’ official website.

He added: “I’ve played against Blackburn many times. It’s a great club with an exciting project and a good manager, so I can’t wait to start my journey.”

Morsy concluded: “I want to win and do anything for that. This is a club I know everything about and we want to give the fans a good team.”

Blackburn will begin their new season on Friday, 14 August, when they face Wolverhampton in the opening round of the league campaign.

The club finished 20th in last season’s Championship table with 52 points. They ended the campaign five points clear of the places leading to relegation to the third tier.

Morsy’s arrival therefore comes as Blackburn prepare for another Championship campaign, with the club looking to improve on last season’s final position. His experience of English football, including a spell in the Premier League with Ipswich Town, adds to the squad as Blackburn prepare for their opening fixture against Wolverhampton.

The move also marks the latest stage of a career that has seen Morsy represent clubs across the English league system. He began with Port Vale before going on to play for Chesterfield, Wigan, Barnsley, Middlesbrough and Ipswich Town. After leaving Ipswich, he joined Bristol City at the start of last season on a one-year deal, making 20 appearances before departing when that agreement came to an end.

Now, after becoming a Blackburn Rovers player on a free transfer, Morsy will represent his eighth English club.
