Nigerian striker David Okereke joins Benevento on free transfer

Nigerian striker David Chidozie Okereke has joined newly promoted Serie B side Benevento on a free transfer after leaving Cremonese.

The Italian club have confirmed the signing of the forward, who was born in 1997, on a contract running until 30 June 2028.

The agreement also includes an option for an automatic extension for another year, which would keep Okereke at Benevento until 30 June 2029.

Okereke had attracted interest from a number of clubs before deciding to remain in Italy. Cincinnati, Samsunspor and Gaziantep FK were among the sides linked with the striker during the weeks leading up to his move.

Benevento ultimately won the race for his signature as they prepare for their return to Serie B.

The club have identified Okereke as an important addition to their attack following their promotion and have handed him a long-term contract as they look to strengthen their squad for the new campaign.

Okereke already has considerable experience of Italian football and has also played at the highest level of European football.

After his spell with Cremonese, the Nigerian moved to Gaziantep FK on loan, where he scored nine goals.

His experience in Italy and his time in Turkey have now led to another opportunity in Serie B, with Benevento hoping the forward can make an immediate contribution.

The striker is known for his mobility and physical presence in attack, qualities that Benevento believe can give them greater options in the final third.

The decision to offer Okereke a three-year contract, with the possibility of a further season, underlines the club’s confidence in his ability to contribute over the long term.

Benevento will be hoping that his experience and finishing can help them build on their promotion and compete effectively in the second tier of Italian football.

For Okereke, the move provides an opportunity to continue his career in Italy after his departure from Cremonese.
