Kaizer Chiefs hit by injury blow ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns showdown

Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz faces a demanding week with injuries to Flavio Da Silva and Ethan Chislett adding to his selection concerns ahead of a crucial clash against Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Glamour Boys have little time to recover from Saturday’s disappointing 1-0 MTN8 quarter-final defeat to Golden Arrows at FNB Stadium, with three matches packed into six days.

Da Silva and Chislett were both unavailable against Arrows, while new signing Langelihle Phili was introduced from the bench for his Chiefs debut.

Da Silva’s absence was particularly significant after the striker scored in Chiefs’ 3-1 Betway Premiership victory over Kruger United the previous weekend. Da Cruz revealed, however, that the forward suffered an injury during training shortly before the cup tie.

“First thing, Silva got hurt yesterday at training, so we were left minus one,” Da Cruz said through his translator.

“We have three games in six days, so we prefer to be careful with him. The same thing for Chislett also.”

The coach’s decision to protect the pair highlights the balancing act facing Chiefs, who must now turn their attention to Wednesday’s league meeting with Sekhukhune United before facing the much bigger test against Sundowns at the weekend.

Chiefs must navigate injury and fitness concerns

The congested schedule comes at a difficult stage of the campaign for Da Cruz, who is still trying to settle his preferred combinations after taking charge.

While the early cup exit will be a setback, the French coach will also have to manage several players who are yet to reach full match fitness.

Phili offered a glimpse of what he can provide after coming on against Arrows, but Da Cruz is reluctant to rush the new arrival following his recent move.

“I’m happy about the performance of Phili today but he’s not 100% as yet, so we’ll go step by step with him to be careful,” he said.

Another new recruit, Faiz Abrahams, was not included in the matchday squad and faces an even longer road towards full readiness after arriving without completing a pre-season programme.

“And with Faiz, he has no pre-season whatsoever, so we are only starting to prepare him now and he’ll need a bit of patience,” Da Cruz added.

Entire squad needed for crucial run

Not every omission from the Arrows defeat was injury-related, with Pule Mmodi and Asanele Velebayi left out for tactical reasons.

Da Cruz stressed that both remain part of his plans, particularly with Chiefs entering a period that will place considerable demands on his squad.

“For Velebayi and Mmodi, it was just a choice today but we have three games in six days, so we’ll need the entire squad because it will be a tough week for all of us,” he said.

With the MTN8 campaign already over, Chiefs must quickly regroup and shift their attention towards the league.

Wednesday’s meeting with Sekhukhune offers Da Cruz an immediate opportunity to restore momentum, but Sundowns will provide the sternest examination of his side only a few days later.

The availability of Da Silva and Chislett could therefore prove crucial. With limited recovery time and several players still building their fitness, Da Cruz will need to manage his resources carefully if Chiefs are to emerge from a punishing week with their league ambitions intact.
