Liverpool set £70m asking price for Cody Gakpo as Tottenham consider summer move

Liverpool have told Tottenham Hotspur that a bid of about £70m could be enough to secure Cody Gakpo, although the Reds are not currently planning to sell the Netherlands international during the summer transfer window.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham have been informed of the approximate figure required to persuade Liverpool to part with the forward. Gakpo has emerged as one of Roberto De Zerbi’s leading targets during the final stages of the transfer market.

Meeting Liverpool’s valuation alone, however, may not be sufficient to complete the deal. Andoni Iraola regards Gakpo as an important part of his plans for next season, while Liverpool are unlikely to consider his departure unless they first sign another wide player to replace him.

Tottenham have been among the biggest spenders in Europe this summer, investing about £240m in new signings. It remains uncertain whether the London club are prepared to test Liverpool’s resolve with an offer large enough to challenge their desire to retain Gakpo.

Liverpool have already signed Victor Munoz from Osasuna, but Iraola has made it clear that he wants further attacking reinforcements before the transfer window closes.

The club are still pursuing Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, although that move has become more complicated since Arsenal entered the race to sign him. Until Liverpool secure suitable attacking additions, allowing Gakpo to leave would therefore carry significant risks.

Gakpo has established himself as a dependable source of goals for Liverpool, and selling him without first bringing in an adequate replacement would leave Iraola with an avoidable gap in his forward line.

His versatility also strengthens the case for Liverpool to keep him. The 27-year-old generally prefers to operate from the left wing, but he can also play as a central striker when required.

That flexibility could be particularly valuable at the start of the new season because Hugo Ekitike is set to be unavailable. Gakpo’s ability to fill the centre-forward position means he offers Liverpool more than an option on the flank.

Tottenham’s interest in the Dutchman has been reported for some time, with the club keen to add further quality to their attack. However, Liverpool’s position and their need for additional forward options make a transfer difficult despite the reported £70m valuation.

Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023. Since moving to Anfield, he has made 180 appearances for the club in all competitions and scored 50 goals.

His numbers dipped during the 2025-26 campaign, when he scored nine times, but Liverpool are still not actively seeking to move him on. The club’s priority remains maintaining its attacking strength, particularly with Iraola wanting Gakpo to remain part of his plans for the season ahead.
