RB Leipzig secure compensation clause in record Yan Diomande move to Real Madrid

RB Leipzig have negotiated a special clause in Yan Diomande’s record transfer to Real Madrid that could provide the German club with further financial benefit, including compensation of about €1.3m if a planned tribute match between the two sides cannot be arranged.

The 19-year-old Ivorian has joined Real Madrid in a deal worth €125m, making the transfer the most expensive in RB Leipzig’s history. However, the agreement also includes a commitment for Real Madrid to play a tribute match against Leipzig in Germany.

According to German newspaper Bild, the fixture was written into the terms of Diomande’s move. Leipzig have used similar arrangements in several major transfers, securing friendly matches against leading European clubs as part of the deals.

A date for the meeting with Real Madrid has not yet been set. The Spanish club, record winners of the Champions League, are expected to face Leipzig during the summer as part of the German side’s preparations for the new season.

Leipzig will use the match as a final test before the campaign begins. They are also due to play another fixture against one of Europe’s major clubs in Munich on 15 August, although the date for the Real Madrid game remains unknown.

The agreement protects Leipzig financially if the tribute match does not take place. The club would receive compensation estimated at €1.3m if the two sides are unable to find a suitable date.

That figure is broadly equivalent to the income Leipzig could have generated from staging the game, including ticket sales and hospitality revenue. The clause therefore gives the club an additional financial return without requiring the fixture to be played.

The €1.3m would not represent an extra transfer fee for Diomande. Instead, it forms part of the bonuses and incentives connected to the agreement.

The overall value of the move could rise to €140m if performance-related conditions linked to Diomande’s progress and success at Real Madrid are met. Leipzig will not, however, receive a percentage of any future sale of the player.

The German club have therefore secured a substantial initial fee, potential bonuses based on the player’s career, and the agreement for a high-profile match against Real Madrid.

Leipzig’s previous transfer agreements

The tribute-match arrangement follows a pattern established in earlier Leipzig deals. When Josko Gvardiol moved to Manchester City in 2023, the agreement included a friendly against the Premier League club.

A similar fixture with Barcelona was arranged after Dani Olmo left Leipzig in 2024, while Benjamin Sesko’s transfer in 2025 was followed by an agreement for a match against Manchester United. Leipzig also secured a comparable arrangement when Julian Nagelsmann moved to Bayern Munich in 2021.

Diomande’s relationship with the Red Bull organisation will also continue beyond his departure from Leipzig. At the same time as completing his move to Real Madrid, the player signed a three-year contract to become an ambassador for the Red Bull brand.

That agreement reflects the profile Diomande has built at a young age. He is regarded as one of the leading emerging attacking talents in world football after attracting attention with his rapid development and impressive performances.

If he continues to progress at Real Madrid, Red Bull will have secured one of the most prominent ambassadors in its portfolio for the coming years. Diomande will represent the brand in the colours of the Spanish club rather than Leipzig.

He joins a group of high-profile players associated with Red Bull, including Brazil forward Neymar, Tottenham Hotspur player Xavi Simons and Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.
