Borussia Dortmund recognise Kaizer Chiefs kit similarities in playful social media post

Borussia Dortmund have acknowledged the long-standing resemblance between their kits and those of South African club Kaizer Chiefs, addressing an observation frequently made by Amakhosi supporters.

The two clubs are traditionally associated with yellow and black, a shared colour combination that has often led fans to draw comparisons between their playing strips.

That similarity is not limited to their home kits. Supporters have also noticed that Borussia Dortmund’s away and third shirts have, at various times, appeared strikingly similar to designs worn by Kaizer Chiefs.

The discussion has become familiar among South African football followers, particularly those who support Chiefs. Their nickname, Amakhosi, is widely used by fans, while the club are also known as the Glamour Boys.

The comparison has now reached Borussia Dortmund themselves. The German giants, known as BVB, responded in an amused manner by highlighting the apparent connection between the two clubs’ kit designs.

The acknowledgement offers an unusual link between two teams separated by geography and competing in different football environments. Borussia Dortmund are one of Germany’s most prominent clubs, while Kaizer Chiefs are one of South Africa’s best-known sides. Yet their visual identities have repeatedly appeared to overlap because of their shared use of yellow and black.

The resemblance is particularly notable because the clubs have not always used the same kit manufacturer. Borussia Dortmund are currently supplied by PUMA, whereas Kaizer Chiefs have a deal with Kappa.

Even so, the similarity has remained apparent across different periods. Kaizer Chiefs’ previous partnership with Nike also produced shirts that supporters felt carried an unmistakable resemblance to Dortmund’s designs.

That history has helped keep the comparison alive whenever either club reveals a new strip. A common colour palette provides the initial connection, but fans have also pointed to similar approaches in the overall appearance of some home, away and third kits.

Borussia Dortmund’s decision to draw attention to the relationship themselves gives the conversation a light-hearted twist. Rather than ignoring the comparisons, the club chose to recognise the observation that has circulated among Kaizer Chiefs supporters for some time.

For Amakhosi fans, the acknowledgement adds another chapter to an entertaining kit-based connection with one of Europe’s most recognisable clubs. It also shows how football shirts can create links between teams and supporters who otherwise have little direct connection.

The comparison comes as kit launches continue to attract considerable interest from supporters around the world. New designs are often judged not only on their appearance, but also against the shirts associated with other clubs.

In this case, Borussia Dortmund and Kaizer Chiefs remain linked by a shared yellow-and-black identity, with their respective kit partnerships unable to prevent fans from seeing similarities between the two sides’ designs.
