Ibrahim Adel sets up goal as Nordsjælland take first-leg advantage over Valur Reykjavik

Nordsjælland began their third-round UEFA Conference League qualifying tie with a 2-0 victory away to Valur Reykjavik, with Egyptian winger Ibrahim Adel providing the assist for the opening goal.

Adel started for Nordsjælland for the second consecutive match and played a key role in the breakthrough at the home of the Icelandic side.

The visitors took the lead in the 30th minute when Villum Berthelsen finished an attack created by Adel’s pass. The assist was Adel’s first direct contribution of the current season for Nordsjælland, coming in his third appearance for the club during the campaign.

Nordsjælland maintained their advantage after the interval before extending it from the penalty spot. Nicklas Røjkjær converted in the 70th minute to give the Danish side a two-goal cushion heading into the second leg.

Adel remained on the pitch for 84 minutes before being replaced by Levi Nene. His inclusion in the starting line-up means he has now begun each of Nordsjælland’s past two matches, while his assist marked his first contribution to a goal this season.

The return fixture will be played at Nordsjælland’s stadium on Thursday, 13 August. The Danish club will be seeking to complete their progress from the tie after establishing a healthy advantage in Reykjavik.

Should Nordsjælland go through, they will face the winner of the meeting between Sheriff Tiraspol and St. Gallen in the final qualifying play-off for the competition.

Friday’s result gives Nordsjælland a strong position in the tie, while Valur Reykjavik must overturn a two-goal deficit in the return match if they are to continue their UEFA Conference League campaign. Adеl’s involvement also provides a notable personal milestone, as the Egypt international supplied the pass that led to the opening goal in his third appearance of the season.
