Getafe close in on Belgian-Congolese Orel Mangala as Lyon push to cut wage bill

Getafe are closing in on a season-long loan deal for Belgium international midfielder Orel Mangala as Lyon step up efforts to reduce their squad and ease their financial burden.

According to L’Equipe, the Spanish side are prepared to cover slightly more than half of Mangala’s wages during his temporary spell, allowing Lyon to remove a significant salary from their books.

The proposed move would give Mangala an opportunity to revive his career in Spain after a difficult period in France and England. Getafe see the 28-year-old as a useful addition to their midfield and are now expected to complete the deal subject to the final details being settled.

Mangala joined Lyon from Nottingham Forest in 2024 on a four-year contract after establishing himself in the Premier League. However, his time at the French club has been disrupted by injuries and inconsistent opportunities.

Injury setback derailed his Lyon spell

The midfielder suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury while on loan at Everton last season, dealing another blow to his hopes of establishing himself at Lyon.

The setback came after Mangala had already struggled to secure a consistent role following his move from Forest. His recovery and substantial salary have subsequently made him one of the players Lyon are eager to move on.

A temporary transfer to Getafe would therefore serve both parties. Mangala would have the chance to regain his fitness and form in La Liga, while Lyon could reduce their wage commitments without immediately cutting ties with the player.

For Getafe, the Belgian’s experience at the highest level makes him an attractive option as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new campaign.
