Chelsea line up £494m player sales as 11 face summer departures

Chelsea are prepared to sell as many as 11 players before the summer transfer deadline, with the London club potentially bringing in almost £500m while continuing an ambitious recruitment drive under new head coach Xabi Alonso.

The possible departures include first-team players such as Enzo Fernandez and Pedro Neto, as well as defenders Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile and Malo Gusto. Taken together, the players’ estimated values total £494m, although Chelsea could demand more for some of them.

The club has been one of the most active sides in the transfer market in recent months. Chelsea paid £117m to sign Morgan Rogers before completing the arrival of Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix.

The additions of Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson in early August represented a departure from Chelsea’s more familiar focus on signing younger players. Henderson has become the club’s eighth arrival of the summer.

Argentina international Valentin Barco has also strengthened Alonso’s squad after joining from Strasbourg. The incoming group is completed by Geovany Quenda, Marco Balestra and Emmanuel Emegha.

Chelsea’s recruitment could help Alonso improve a team that finished 10th last season, but the volume of new arrivals has also created a heavily congested squad. According to The Mirror, citing The Athletic, the club may now need to oversee a substantial clear-out before the transfer window closes.

Defenders among those at risk

Chelsea are expected to reduce their defensive numbers following Lacroix’s arrival. Alonso has said he would prefer to work with only “four or five” defenders in his squad.

Trevoh Chalobah is close to a £31m move to Como, but he may not be the only defender to leave Stamford Bridge.

Disasi, who spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham United, is reportedly available for about £25m. Badiashile is valued at £30m, while Gusto is not regarded as an automatic starter and could command a fee of about £75m.

Fernandez has been repeatedly linked with an exit, although Chelsea would reportedly seek £120m for the midfielder. The Argentina international joined the club from Benfica for £106m in January 2023.

Neto is also considered an important player by Chelsea, but his position is not regarded as completely secure. The Portugal international has been linked with a possible £70m move away from the club.

Strikers could make way for Welbeck

Welbeck’s arrival is expected to increase pressure on Chelsea’s forwards, with the club likely to consider selling several attacking players.

Liam Delap is among the most likely candidates to leave after an underwhelming first season. Chelsea will nevertheless aim to make a profit on the £30m they paid Ipswich Town for him last summer.

Nicolas Jackson is valued at £65m and has attracted interest from Aston Villa after spending last season on loan at Bayern Munich. Young forward Mark Guiu, who made 13 appearances for Chelsea last season, is thought to be worth £25m.

Emegha, who joined from Strasbourg, is already facing an uncertain future at the club. His value is estimated at £20m by Transfermarkt.

Chelsea are also expected to seek a permanent transfer for David Datro Fofana, whose valuation is put at £3m.

The potential fees for all 11 players come to £494m, with the possibility that Chelsea could receive higher amounts for some members of the squad. That would allow the club to offset a significant portion of its summer spending while giving Alonso a smaller group with which to work.
